Hot tub leak detection is a different job than pool leak detection, even though the two get lumped together constantly. A hot tub or spa has jets, an air blower, and a heater loop that a pool simply doesn’t have — and any one of them can be the source of a slow, hard-to-spot leak.
Why Hot Tub Leak Detection Isn’t Just Smaller-Scale Pool Leak Detection
The plumbing density is the big difference. A backyard spa or spillover hot tub packs a dozen or more jet lines, a blower line, and a heater loop into a footprint a fraction the size of a pool. That means more fittings, more unions, and more places for a leak to start — concentrated into a much smaller area. Standard pool-only pressure testing equipment isn’t built to isolate that many individual lines efficiently, which is why hot tub leak detection calls for a different testing sequence.
Where Hot Tub Leaks Usually Start
In our experience, three spots account for most hot tub leaks:
- Jet fittings and unions — the o-rings and threaded connections behind each jet are the single most common failure point.
- The air blower line — often overlooked because it doesn’t carry water under normal operation, but it can siphon water out through a cracked check valve when the blower isn’t running.
- Spillover connections — on a combo pool/spa, the spillway or spillover spout is a common spot for a slow leak that only shows up when the spa is actively running.
How We Approach Hot Tub Leak Detection
Hot tub leak detection starts the same way pool leak detection does — ruling out evaporation with a bucket test, then moving to dye testing and pressure testing. From there we isolate each jet line individually, check the blower line separately, and test the spillover connection under both static and running conditions. It’s slower, more methodical work than a straight pool inspection, precisely because there’s more plumbing packed into less space. If your hot tub or spa is losing water and you’re not sure whether it’s a leak or just splash-out and evaporation, we handle both spa leak detection and full pool inspections with the same crew.
