Underground plumbing leaks leave fingerprints. If the pool loses water mainly while the pump is running, the leak is usually on the pressure side — the return lines pushing water back to the pool. If you see air bubbles from the returns or the pump struggles to prime, the suction side (skimmer or main drain line) is pulling in air through a breach. Steady loss around the clock can be plumbing or the shell itself — that’s what testing sorts out.
How We Pinpoint the Leak
Static dye testing with the lines isolated tells us which line — skimmer, main drain, returns, or spa — is actually losing water. That line then gets pressure tested, and water, air, and a listening device work together to pinpoint the break through the deck, marking the dig spot within inches. Do you have to drain the pool to fix a main drain leak?
Usually not. Many main drain issues can be addressed with the pool full, and the line can often be safely plugged or bypassed while a repair is planned. In Florida’s high water table, keeping the pool full is also the safe choice — an empty shell can lift out of the ground.
How do you know which pipe it is?
Static dye testing with the lines isolated identifies the leaking line; pressure testing that one line pinpoints the break. You never pay to dig up a healthy pipe.
What does an underground leak repair involve?
