Finding a crack in your pool is unsettling — but most cracks are not emergencies, and many don’t leak at all. The job is to figure out which kind you have: cosmetic surface crazing, a leaking shell crack, or a structural problem that needs real attention. That’s exactly what we do.

Surface Crack or Structural Crack?

Plaster and pebble finishes develop fine “check cracks” and crazing as they age — unsightly, but usually watertight and shallow. Structural cracks go through the shell itself, often show up as a continuous line across the floor or down a wall, and may telegraph through to the deck or tile line. The distinction matters because the repairs are completely different, and so are the price tags.

First Question: Is It Leaking?

We dye test the crack along its full length. Dye pulled into the crack means water is moving through it — a leak. Dye drifting past means the crack is cosmetic (for now). Paired with a full leak detection, this tells you whether the crack is actually the source of your water loss, or just a distraction from a leak somewhere else. It’s common for a homeowner to blame a visible crack while the real culprit is a skimmer or fitting.

Our sandy soils settle unevenly, and pools move with them. The other big cause is preventable: draining a pool in Florida’s high water table without proper precautions. An empty shell can crack — or lift out of the ground entirely — from groundwater pressure alone. If your pool ever needs draining, make sure whoever does it knows what they’re doing.

How Cracks Get Fixed

Leaking structural cracks are opened, injected, and sealed — and in cases where movement is ongoing, reinforced so the crack doesn’t simply reopen next season. Is a hairline crack serious?

Usually not — most hairline cracks are surface-level and don’t leak. But a hairline crack that keeps growing, or one you can catch a fingernail in along its whole length, deserves a dye test.

Will the crack come back after repair?

A properly injected and reinforced repair on a stable shell should hold. If the ground under the pool is still moving, we’ll tell you that up front rather than sell you a repair that won’t last.

My deck is cracking too. Same problem?

Deck and shell are separate structures — deck cracks are common and usually harmless to the pool. Cracks appearing in both, in line with each other, are a sign of settlement worth evaluating.
