Skimmer & Main Drain Leaks: How We Find and Fix Them

If your pool is losing water, there’s a good chance the culprit is one of two usual suspects: the skimmer or the main drain. Both are constantly submerged, constantly stressed by water flow, and — over time — prone to developing leaks.

Why Skimmers Leak

The skimmer is one of the hardest-working parts of your pool’s circulation system, and its housing is bonded to the pool shell with a seal that can crack or degrade over years of use, temperature swings, and ground movement. Even a hairline crack around the skimmer throat can account for surprisingly significant water loss.

Why Main Drains Leak

Main drain leaks can involve the drain body, its connection to the pool shell, the plumbing connection, or the underground suction line. Testing is needed to distinguish a leak at the drain from one farther along the plumbing. Learn more about main drain and return line leak detection.

How We Diagnose Skimmer vs. Main Drain Leaks

We use dye testing to check suspect openings, fittings and cracks, isolate plumbing as needed, and pressure test suspect lines. Acoustic listening equipment helps locate an underground break. The testing sequence depends on the pool and what we find. See our pool leak detection process.

Repair Options

The repair depends on the confirmed leak location and the condition of the affected component. A damaged skimmer may need skimmer replacement, while a broken line may need a targeted plumbing repair. We explain the repair scope, any access or draining required, and the price before repair work begins.
